Challenge

To create an attention-getting building design for the prominently-located facility, the architect chose a building design with a dramatically sloping roof that spanned large areas for the natatorium and exercise facilities.

Solution

Hodge Structural Engineers developed a design for the exposed roof framing of the Olympic-sized natatorium, using graceful trusses of round tubular members. The trusses, which are bowed in plane and elevation, came to be known as "canoe trusses," and became an architectural theme for the building.
